I have heard of airlines selling cheap last minute flights from Melbourne to Christchurch, sometimes only about $30 one way. I think tey usually do it on fridays but can’t manage to find anything. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Last minute, yes. Cheap last minute, not likely. You’re better off buying as far ahead as possible, most major airlines have offices in Bangkok and there’s plenty of travel agents who can check all the different airlines for the best fares.
